Linda practices a centuries old tradition, handed down by the Iroquois Indians from the late 1700s. She also teaches classes to preserve this art form among her native people. The making of a basket is a complicated process, involving a number of people in the community. First the black ash tree is selected and cut down. The bark is then stripped from the tree. Pounding the length of the log with the back of an axe head causes thick splints to separate at the annual rings. Thinner splints are created by splitting the splint with a knife. The use of sweetgrass requires additional labor for the gathering, cleaning, and weaving of the sweetgrass into a braid. Color can also be incorporated into the design process, creating intricate works of art. Linda has practiced her art under the expert guidance of Mae Bigtree, a well-known basket maker of Akwesasne. Linda has been creating baskets to continue the tradition of this Mohawk art form among her people of Akwesasne. Linda currently teaches basketry and crafts at the Akwesasne Museum, and her art works are displayed at the Akwesasne Museum in Hogansburg, NY and the Iroquois Museum in Howes Cave, NY. 2005Tom Phillips![]() Tom Phillips is a celebrated artist in the Northern New York region.
