Canton Tree Committee
The Canton Tree Committee was established in May 2010 with the full support of the Mayor and the Village Board. The mission of the group is to protect and improve the village tree canopy.
Did you know that trees:
Provide a safer walking environment and reduce the speed of traffic
Protect you from rain, sun, heat, wind
Reduce noise and pollution
Provide a home to wildlife
Add value to homes and business
Reduce stress and blood pressure
Reduce global warming through CO2 removal and 02 production
Trees must continuously be replaced due to storms, disease, age, vandalism, and road widening.
The mission includes these objectives:
- Establish short and long term tree planting and maintenance plans;
- Fundraise for and implement community tree planting projects;
- Educate individuals in the community, especially children and youth, about the importance of planting and protecting trees; and
- Advise and assist with village tree planting initiatives
The Committee organizes an annual Arbor Day event in April and works to raise community awareness of the importance of trees. The Committee has successfully raised private funds through a Memory Tree Program. Citizens can donate money to plant a tree in honor of a loved one.
Planting initiatives for 2013-2015 are funded through a DEC Urban Forestry Grant and a Scott Tissue Grant submitted by the St. Lawrence County Soil and Water Conservation District.
We are always looking for new members. If you would like to join please call Joette Holgado at 379-1642.
