St. Lawrence University

St. Lawrence University, chartered in 1856, is an independent, private, non-denominational university whose mission is to provide an inspiring and demanding undergraduate education in the liberal arts to students selected for their seriousness of purpose and intellectual promise. It is the oldest continuously coeducational institution of higher learning in New York State. The University's 2,100 students come from 39 U.S. states and 20 countries; about half of every first year class is from New York State and St. Lawrence has a special commitment to North Country students.  The University makes the most of its location for unparalleled access to international government, cultural and social opportunities and outdoor recreation.

St. Lawrence University offers a liberal arts learning environment providing 34 majors, 35 minors, three graduate programs in education, and 12 interdepartmental programs, including a nationally recognized First-Year Program, taught by 165 full-time faculty.  St. Lawrence offers programs in 14 nations, plus has membership in the International Student Exchange Program, and three off-campus domestic programs (including an Adirondack Semester).  St. Lawrence is in the midst of an educational renaissance, with ambitious academic initiatives, and with major facilities improvements, supported by a recently completed $132 million capital campaign, that provide expanded resources for undergraduate learning.

The St. Lawrence campus is wholly residential, and enjoys a positive relationship with its neighbors in the community. Students live in one of 12 residence halls, eight Greek chapter houses; over a dozen theme cottages and intentional living communities, or a new “townhouse” style complex for seniors.

The University’s art gallery offers eight to twelve exhibits each year, and has no admission charges.  Lectures, theatre and music productions fill the calendar and most also are free of charge.

Most athletic facilities are new or have been renovated since 1998 and include two field houses, each with artificial turf infield, track and tennis courts; two regulation basketball courts; competition swimming and diving pool; nine squash courts; 133-station fitness center; climbing wall; ice arena; equestrian arena.  Outdoor facilities include competition and practice fields for soccer, softball, baseball, football, lacrosse and field hockey along with a lighted artificial turf field; six lighted tennis courts; lighted all-weather nine-lane track and lighted football/track stadium; 18-hole championship golf course. Recreation facilities include jogging/walking trail, cross country/mountain bike trails, intramural fields, outdoor basketball and volleyball courts. North Country neighbors can purchase a membership in the Fitness Club.

Regional friends cheer on the 32 varsity teams number (15 men’s, 16 women’s and one coeducational). Men’s and women’s ice hockey are NCAA Division I; the remainder are Division III, with the exception of equestrian, which is not an NCAA sport. Intramural and club teams flourish in several sports and activities, depending on student interest.
