Enjoy the Great OutdoorsOpportunities for recreation are unsurpassed in a community of Canton ’s size. There are two 18-hole golf courses: the St. Lawrence Golf and Country Club, and the Partridge Run Golf and Country Club, which was completed in 1995. Together, they offer the St. Lawrence Valley’s finest golfing. There are two artificial ice arenas: St. Lawrence University’s Appleton Arena, and the Canton Recreational Pavilion. Community hockey programs include Canton Central High School’s boys and girls varsity hockey programs and the Canton Pee Wee Association minor league hockey. In addition, public skating is available at the Pavilion. Then there are the outdoors clubs. The Canton Sportsmen’s Club sponsors horseshoe tournaments, softball tournaments, and events associated with hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. The St. Lawrence County Snowmobile Association maintains and grooms over 500 miles of trails for public use. Canoeing on the Grasse and Little Rivers has been a popular past time for over 100 years. Throughout the year, the St. Lawrence Valley Paddlers Club offers a variety of canoeing and kayaking events. In the spring, Canton is home to the Rushton Canoe Races, which attract hundreds of visitors. The Remington Recreation Trail is a paved 3.3-mile trail surrounding the Partridge Run Golf Course, great for walking, biking or rollerblading. Finally, the Indian Creek Nature Center has several different trails for hiking or nature study, comprising a 4.5-mile network of trails. The trail system includes an observation tower and a boardwalk trail that is accessible to people with disabilities. There is also a picnic pavilion, a learning center and restroom facilities. The Nature Center is a part of the Upper and Lower Lakes State Wildlife Management area and it is an excellent site for bird watching! Beyond Canton, there are even more recreational opportunities. From skiing and hiking in the Adirondacks, to fishing in the St. Lawrence Seaway, we have an abundance of outdoor activities to participate in each season!
