About Canton

The Town of Canton is a community of two Villages — The Village of Canton and the Village of Renssealer Falls --- and several hamlets and beautiful open spaces.  We have pristine farms, open meadows, woodlands, valleys, the beautiful Grasse River and a historic downtown business center. Our community is comprised of its proud citizens — hardworking individuals raising their families.  Canton residents and families feel a genuine sense of community within our neighborhoods where neighbors know each other, citizens are involved with their schools, churches and other organizations.  It is a wonderful place to call home.

Our community is an especially attractive community for young professionals, for entrepreneurs who wish to start a niche business, for those in technology of communications who can choose a location based on quality of life, for retired couples, or for raising a family!

We are also proud to be home to two excellent Universities: St. Lawrence University, and SUNY Canton (State University of New York-Canton).  Canton proudly represents the county seat of St. Lawrence County.

Canton offers a healthy business community and an active Chamber of Commerce.  Our Economic Development Office works with local government officials, the planning boards, and new businesses to improve our local community and ensure that businesses have the opportunity to thrive and prosper.

We invite you to take the time to “discover Canton” and all our community has to offer!

County Seat

The Village of Canton is the County Seat for St. Lawrence County.  Several services are found in both the Court House on Court Street and the new County Complex on State Highway 310 in the Village of Canton.  St. Lawrence County is the largest in area in New York State, encompassing some 2,840 square miles.   Located in a central location, Canton has easy access to many important cities and locations in the Northeastern United States and in Eastern Canada.

North Country Community

Canton is located in northern New York, near the center of St. Lawrence County, nestled at the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains and eighteen miles from the Canadian border.  The St. Lawrence River lies only twenty miles to the north and Canton sits at the edge of the broad St. Lawrence River plain.  The Town of Canton is largely rural, with population and employment centers located in the villages of Canton and Renssealer Falls.
