About Canton

The Village of Canton is the population center of the Town and is an attractive college community with a historic business center, two golf courses, lovely parks and museums. It is home to two excellent universities, St. Lawrence University, a private four-year liberal arts college, and SUNY Canton, which offers two and four year degrees. The Village is also the County Seat of St. Lawrence County, with services on Court St. and the Human Services Building on Route 310. Canton is proud to be the headquarters of an excellent public radio station, North Country Public Radio, 89.5 FM.

The Town of Canton includes, as well, the Village of Rensselaer Falls on the Oswegatchie River and the hamlets of Morley and Pyrites. The Town, predominantly rural in character, encompasses farms, open meadows, woodlands and beautiful open spaces. It is located eighteen miles from the Canadian border in the broad St. Lawrence River plain, with the Adirondacks just to the east.

Canton is a strong community where neighbors know each other and citizens are involved with their schools, churches, and other organizations. It is a wonderful place for families to raise children, or for retirees to enjoy an active retirement.

Canton offers a healthy business community and an active Chamber of Commerce. Our Economic Development Office works to improve our local community and ensure that businesses have the opportunity to thrive and prosper.

We invite you to take the time to “Discover Canton” and all our community has to offer.
